ISA Northeast 2021 Presentations: Regionalism in Latin America and Beyond
Between November 4 and 6, ISA Northeast held its 2021 conference as a virtual event with over 75 panels and 400 presentations by leading international relations scholars from around the world.
A keynote speech was delivered by Siba N. Grovogui, Professor of International Relations Theory at Cornell University.
I had the pleasure of presenting two papers and discuss a plethora of recent research findings and their implications for the field of IR.
My first paper argued against the increasingly common practice of drawing a close connection between culture and regional integration. Instead, I argued the latter is much more deeply interlinked with historical processes and inter-governmental organisations. This paper was entitled, “Regionalism Beyond ‘Culture’: Colonial History as a Determining Factor for Shared Integration Paths across the Global South”, and it was presented on panel TF05: Regions, Borderlands and Alternative Universalities (Chair: Dr. Halit M. Tagma, Northern Arizona University).
My second paper was based on empirical analysis of four Latin American organisations and it sought to establish the building blocs of a potential new regional integration from and for the Global South. It was presented on panel FE04: International Organisations, Law and Governance (Chair: Dr. Zahir Kolia, Lakehead University).
