Guest Lecture on Bulgarian Democratic Transition at Peking University
On April 26, I was invited to deliver a guest lecture at the oldest and most prestigious education institution in China, Peking University.
The lecture was designed for graduate students of Area Studies and it provided an in-depth dive into the process of Bulgaria’s transition from a socialist state to a democracy. In addition to critical analysis of recent historical events, the lecture also featured many short videos which illustrated pivotal moments in Bulgaria’s recent history, such as the reception of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in Bulgaria upon his return.
Understanding the historical conditions and political transition of countries such as Bulgaria is essential for students who are interested in European or East European studies. I was glad to have the opportunity to engage with them and after the lecture, we address a variety of other questions in an extensive Q&A session.
I look forward to returning to Peking University again as it is always a pleasure to have intellectually stimulating conversations with its students and catch up with colleagues there.
