Chairing an ISA Panel on China’s Rise and its Impact on Global Order
Dr. Ivo Ganchev, the Founder of the Centre for Regional Integration, chaired and served as a discussant for an academic panel at the ISA 2023 Virtual Conference, which took place from August 1 to August 4, 2023. The panel, titled “China’s Rise and its Impact on Global Order” featured presentations by talented emerging scholars.
One presenter was Dr. Inho Choi from Bilkent University, who explored the East Asian trajectory of a non-territorial modern international order. Choi proposed the concept of fractal space as a way to understand the spatial transformations of international order in East Asia, and how they challenged the conventional notions of sovereignty, territory, and borders. Choi analyzed cases of non-territorial spaces in East Asia.
Another presenter was Mr. Sibei Sun from the University of Macau, who examined the American press narratives of Chinese asylum seekers in the context of great power rivalry. Sun argued that the media representations of Chinese migrants were influenced by the geopolitical interests and ideological orientations of the United States, and that they reflected the ambivalence and anxiety of the American public towards China’s rise.
Dr. Ganchev provided constructive and insightful feedback to the presenters, and praised their originality and rigor. He also facilitated a lively and fruitful discussion among the panelists and the audience, who raised various questions and comments on the topics of international order and migration. The panel was well received by the conference participants, who appreciated the relevance and significance of the issues addressed by the panel.
