Invited Lecture on U.S. Foreign Policy at Universidad Anáhuac, Mexico
On 10 February 2025, Dr. Ivo Ganchev, Founding Director of the Centre for Regional Integration, delivered a lecture titled Trump’s Foreign Policy: Strategic Repositioning in a Multipolar World? at Universidad Anáhuac’s South Campus in Ciudad de México. The event was attended by students and faculty eager to examine the strategic trajectory of U.S. foreign policy ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential elections.
Hosted by the Faculty of Global Studies for International Relations at Anáhuac, the lecture explored how the United States is undergoing a deliberate strategic repositioning in response to the emergence of a changing world order which exhibits increasingly multipolar characteristics. Dr. Ganchev argued that this shift is characterized by more selective international engagement, increased economic leverage, and a narrowing focus on key regions of interest.
During the talk, Dr. Ganchev drew on case studies—including Colombia, Panama, Greenland, and Canada—to illustrate how U.S. foreign policy under a second Trump administration could manifest in practice. He outlined how traditional alliances may be restructured, with U.S. partners expected to bear greater responsibility for their own defense, and highlighted the growing importance of economic tools such as tariffs, selective decoupling, and supply chain reshoring.
A key insight from the lecture was that both pro- and anti-American sentiment are likely to rise globally as U.S. influence becomes more geographically concentrated and more strategically intense. “We are not witnessing the end of U.S. power,” Dr. Ganchev noted, “but rather its recalibration in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.”
Dr. Ganchev extended his gratitude to Dr. Alina Gamboa Combs for the kind invitation, as well as to Mr. Fernando Hernández Sánchez (Academic Coordinator) and Dr. Arturo Flores (Coordinator of the Research Centre for International Relations) for their support in organizing the session.
