Live TV Interview Discussing China’s Response to Trump’s Tariff Hike
On 10 April 2025, Dr. Ivo Ganchev appeared live from Beijing on Bulgaria’s national TV station bTV to join the highly popular “Tazi Sutrin” (Тази Сутрин) for a discussion on China’s response to the latest U.S. tariff increases announced by President Donald Trump.
In the interview, Dr. Ganchev provided an in-depth analysis of the immediate economic reactions in China, including the suspension of new orders from U.S. companies by Chinese factories due to tariff uncertainty. He also highlighted the broad domestic support within China for a firm response and discussed the strategic reorientation of Chinese trade toward alternative markets in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Dr. Ganchev introduced his “traffic light” framework for understanding Trump’s tariff policy, categorizing countries into “green,” “yellow,” and “red” zones based on their trade relations with the U.S. He emphasized the implications of this policy for Europe and underscored the necessity for Bulgaria to define a clear national strategy in what he calls a “bipolar world with multipolar characteristics”.
