Trending Media Interview Receives over 1.5 Million Views in China
After the visits of several European leaders to Beijing in April, Dr. Ivo Ganchev was interviewed by the second Chinese largest news agency (after Xinhua), China News Service.
Dr. Ganchev was featured on Insights (世界观), an video series which has recently hosted several distinguished guests, such as Harvard scholar Joseph Nye and former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Erik Solheim.
Several parts of the interview were are ready to be aired separately. Two of them already came out on April 30 and May 2 and received over 1.5 million views altogether, and both briefly entered the list of top 10 trending videos (热门视频) on the China News platform!
This is a testament to the welcoming response that Chinese audiences have towards positive developments in EU-China relations. Against the landscape of increasingly tense relations with the US, China will continue to embrace opportunities for cooperation with the EU. Meanwhile, high inflation and the security crisis at Europe’s doorstep make business with China even more alluring.
Both China and the EU should seek to protect their interests in sensitive areas, but when it comes to topics of mutual interest (e.g., trade, green energy, climate change and Russia-Ukraine peace talks) EU-China cooperation is simply necessary.
In his interview, Dr. Ganchev made several pertinent points, some of which are quoted below.
“From a European perspective, [the consecutive visits of several EU leaders to Beijing] mean that there is some level of increasing coordination regarding relations with China the European approach will involve more dialogue and cooperation between two sides.”
“From a Chinese perspective, I think that the message is willingness for greater openness and continued multilateral engagement in the post pandemic era, which has a real and very tangible effect on business communities. Companies that might have been somewhat hesitant in terms of how they form their future strategy for the post pandemic era have been given a clear sign.”
“A lot of European leaders are looking for ways to enable more openings for the leading companies in their countries and to help them to do more business, both in China and in Asia at large.”
“[China] has phenomenal economic growth that none other country can achieve at such a scale. And the way that the EU and China relations can be conducted, as we’ve seen from the recent visits in a civil and cooperative manner, can set a good example for other great power relations as well. The trade between these two huge markets also contributes to global growth [and] this can help to prevent issues such as a potential recession.”
